Online public consultation on the second draft National Strategic Framework for Chronic Conditions is now open. This only happens once a decade so make your voice heard!
A National Strategic Framework for Chronic Conditions is being developed by the Australian Government Department of Health in partnership with states and territories, under the auspice of the Australian Health Ministers’ Advisory Council (AHMAC).
It is the main policy for the prevention and management of chronic conditions in Australia. It will guide development and implementation of policies, strategies, actions and services to address chronic conditions and improve health outcomes. The Framework will supersede the National Chronic Disease Strategy 2005.
We were completely left out of the Australian Institute of Health Welfare’s (AIHW) Australian Burden of Disease Study: Impact and Causes of Illness and Causes of Death in Australia 2011 report, despite the number of people affected by ME and the level of disability is causes.
ME was mentioned in the Senate committee’s Report on the Inquiry into Chronic Disease Prevention and Management in Primary Health Care however it included inaccurate figures, saying that 25% remain ill when the studies show that 95% remain ill, vastly underestimating the impact.
The National Strategic Framework for Chronic Conditions guides government decisions on how existing resources are allocated. Don’t let people with Myalgic Encephalomyelitis be forgotten again.
The consultation is here https://consultations.health.gov.au/ It is an online survey so have a look at the draft framework before you begin. Here are facts and figures on ME in Australia for reference.
Remember to point out the evidence of harm of graded exercise therapy too: Reporting of Harms Associated with Graded Exercise Therapy and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy in Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.
The public consultation is open until midnight Wednesday 22 June 2016.
Unfortunately the opportunity to have input into the Medical Research Future Fund just closed. Did you make the deadline?
This graph shows the impact of disease against government spending in the USA. In Australia, spending is even lower. Let’s try and change that.

Hello Celine,
It doesn’t seem to limit it to people living in Australia but I’m not sure it is ethical for me to suggest that you fill it out if you aren’t planning to move here!
Thank you for reading.
It seems as if they have mixed up the fact that 25% of people with ME/CFS are bedbound, with the 4-5% prognosis for recovery.
Yes. Thank you for reading and commenting, Adrienne.
